A lot of people have asked me where they can go to see some of these retro diner booth or bar setups in person… where you can actually sit on them or at them and bring your tape measure along to ge actual proportions. The one I recommend is the home of Bars and Booths at 200 West Washington Street in Charles Town, WV (about an hour and a half drive from Washington, DC, or Baltimore, MD).
Here you will find everything from tables and stools to classic coin-operated kiddie rides (think about one in your playroom), popcorn machines, neon signs, classic Coke machines and more.
It’s open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 6 pm and the staff expects you to wander and explore…and ask any questions you would like.
Charles Town is a great place to visit as well. Founded by George Washington’s brother Charles in the 18th Century, it is also the location of the trial of abolitionist John Brown who raided nearby Harper’s Ferry 150 years ago, kicking off, as many historians will tell you, the Civil War. There are local historical tours available.
So if you want a showroom for the kind of decor we love, c’mon over to Charles Town.
